DIY HVAC Maintenance You Can Do Today

Monthly Tasks
Replace/Check Air Filter
- The single most important maintenance task
- Check monthly, replace every 1-3 months
- Hold up to light - if you can't see through it, replace it
Check Thermostat
- Verify settings are correct
- Replace batteries annually
- Clean dust from inside
Seasonal Tasks
Spring (Before Cooling Season)
Outdoor Unit:- Turn off power at disconnect
- Remove debris (leaves, grass, dirt)
- Gently hose off fins (from inside out)
- Trim plants back 2 feet
- Level the unit if it's shifted
- Clean supply and return vents
- Test AC by lowering thermostat 5 degrees
- Listen for unusual sounds
Fall (Before Heating Season)
- Replace air filter
- Test heating by raising thermostat
- Check for drafts around windows and doors
- Clear area around furnace/air handler
Things NOT to DIY
Leave these to professionals:
- Refrigerant handling (requires certification)
- Electrical work
- Gas connections
- Heat exchanger inspection
- Ductwork repairs
- Thermostat wiring
When to Call a Pro
Schedule professional maintenance if:
- System hasn't been serviced in over a year
- You hear unusual noises
- Performance has declined
- Energy bills have increased
- System is over 10 years old
Simple Troubleshooting
System won't turn on:- Check thermostat settings and batteries
- Check circuit breaker
- Check outdoor disconnect switch
- Wait 5 minutes and try again
- Check air filter
- Check that vents are open
- Check return vents aren't blocked
